The Principles of Design

The principles of design: balance, emphasis, rhythm and unity, determine what you do with each of the design elements and how you do it. To use the analogy of food preparation we used when we discussed the elements: The principles are the recipe directions and the elements the ingredients. The recipe directions help in combining the ingredients to create a good meal.

Each principle can be applied to each of the nine design elements; one can use all nine or only a few to create your design.

As you work with the design principles, keep asking yourself how each will help your knife design work, make it attractive and convey the feeling or mood you have in mind.
