Organic Materials

Each craft has its own range of materials that is unique to that craft. Jewellers uses precious metals, and precious and semi precious stone, cabinet makers uses different hard and soft woods, a blacksmith uses iron and steel, the coppersmith uses copper, tin and brass, each to his own. Then comes the modern knifemaker who uses all of this and more. Just the different steels are enough to make a newcomer to the trade cringe. Add to this the handle materials, materials for fittings, and the learning curve becomes a vertical slope.

In this section I attempt to provide some information on the materials used by the different crafts, and how each can be applied in knifemaking.
