Steel is the basis of all knifemaking (except for those who make reproductions of antique knives where tinned bronzes, flint and iron was used)

Steel in its most basic for is an alloy of iron and carbon. The carbon in the steel causes the steel to become hard when the steel is quenched (cooled down fast) at red heat.
