Value

I do not mean the amount of money the client is willing to fork out for a knife!

Value is the darkness or lightness of an area. Colours have value such a dark and light green; it is easier to think in terms of black and white with shades of grey in between, as used in pencil drawing and B/W photography.

The use of value in knife making, although not as extensive as in drawing and painting, can still add to the overall feel or mood of a knife.

Two Bowies, one a matte black finish from tip to pommel, the other with a fine satin finished blade, polished guard and ivory handle, will create two different moods or feelings within the beholder, even though they are the same size and shape.
The dark one gives a feeling of clandestine work in darkness; it is an aggressive, brutal killing machine. The other conveys a feeling of openness, justice, and purity. A blade that will be used to defend noble causes.
